Question #1 - Can We Make an All-Star Team of Cheerleaders From Our League to Attend?
In a word, YES but it is very rare! The NYFC Cheer Championships are largely attended by teams that have cheered together all year long. Some leagues combine two or even three teams together to make a team. This is rarely to form a superstar team - it is basically done to fill numbers for a few kids that cannot attend and give all the girls a fun activity to be a part of!
Question #2 - What Are the Ages of your Competition Divisions?
Assignment of squads to a competition division within each level is based on the Average Team Age of girls on the squad (not including mascots). For example, a nine-girl squad has six girls 8 years of age, one girl 9 years of age, and two girls 11 years of age. Their Average Team Age is 8.77. The maximum age for cheerleaders is 16 (as of the date of the competition). The teams are then divided into divisions that will makes the ages similar. This method of division creation was begun many years ago when a few cheer coaches began to leave girls home to squeak into a younger division (which we found reprehensible). These cheer divisions are created to provide the fairest competition possible for all squads and still encourage maximum participation on the squads.
Question #3 - What Are Some Specific Items that Make the NYFC Cheerleading Championships a Better Experience?
We used to get this one quite a bit in the earlier years of the NYFC. Luckily, word-of-mouth has answered this question for most coaches and parents! Basically, everything we do at the NYFC is done from two perspectives. 1) How can we make the event special for the attendees and 2) How can we make the event as safe as possible while still keeping the event affordable for the majority of youth teams.
The event is held within an 8,000 seat arena that is first class in event way! The Ocean Center Arena is an amazing facility with plenty of easy access parking, full, rich house sound, great lighting, and comfortable raised seating to see the competition in a relaxed way throughout the day. The event maintains an official videographer that professionally shoots every squad performance and projects these images onto a huge 350 sq. ft. overhead screen to give the youngsters the feel of competing on the biggest stage of their lives! We bring in professional quality cheer mats to create a flawless competition floor, as well as provide a runway practice area backstage to allow the girls the ability to prepare for their big moment (with medical personnel on site should the need arise). Then, Sports Network International works with several professional NFL cheer squads to obtain cheerleaders with extensive backgrounds in cheerleading at many levels to serve as both judges and role models for the cheer performers. These judges not only score the event, but do autographs and photos with the performers, giving them a big-time feel unmatched by simply "gymnasium competitions" that are held everywhere around this country!
Also, the NYFC maintains no additional team or individual insurance requirements to attend. This can be a very big hassle to be forced to run around getting insurance binders and other paperwork! All of the NYFC paperwork is received well in advance and easily understood. Our closing ceremonies/awards presentations are done in a special fashion, with an elaborate awards ceremony that features videos, music and fun, along with some of the finest trophies in all of sports!
Question #4 - We Have a Very Small Squad - Can We Still Compete?
The rules of the NYFC Chearleading Championships allow squads with as few as FIVE competitors on the floor to be judged and comnpete. There is no maximum number limitation however.
Question #5 - Is it True that the NYFC Cheerleading Championships have NFL Cheerleaders as Judges?
Short answer, YES and YES! The competition is judged by current NFL cheerleaders within the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins or Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization. These squads have many, many ladies and several always have extensive competitive cheer backgrounds. Along with their extensive training in dance and choreography, they do a GREAT JOB judging the competition! They take their job very seriously, read the judging materials in advance and the ladies (and frankly everyone!) love to have them on-hand. They like to have autograph signing and even photos are often taken with the cheerleaders. We have done this for over 20 years and have a great track record of happy competitors and spectators.

Question #6 - When Does the Official NYFC Invite & Website Become Updated for the Next Year?
While the date for the NYFC (American Thanksgiving Weekend) is set immediately after the previous year event, the official invite and other needed materials are generally posted by JUNE 15. The official invitation are mailed out the July 4th weekend. That being said, very little changes from year to year so we always leave the previous year information posted to allow all programs looking for details the ability to read and plan from the previous year materials. Interested football teams and cheer groups are encouraged to call or email Sports Network International to be placed on a preferred status in our database.
Question #7 - We Don't Want to Enter the Cheer Competition But We Want to Cheer on the Sidelines?
Several teams do this every year and it always pains us here at SNI to see this. The NYFC Cheer Championships is a fantastic, non-judgemental stage to have the girls work hard towards a goal and then compete. Win or lose, they are always better for their efforts. Most teams that do this regret their decision BUT if you are SURE you do not wish to compete, simply DO NOT submit the Cheer Registration Fee for the competition. If you wish to cheer on the sidelines for the football games or at halftime, you will be considered participants in the event (whether you enter the cheer competition or not) and therefore you will need to stay and pay through the Team Package Plan as outlined on the NYFC Costs Page regardless of the age of the cheerleaders.
If your girls do not wish to compete AND do not wish to sheer on the sidelines or be a part of the event in any way, they will be considered and should be treated like NYFC spectators. Spectators do NOT need to pay anything as a Team Package Fee and may or may not need to obtain an event pass to attend the competitions, depending on their ages. For greater details, please review the Event Costs page on this website.
Question #8 - We're Not SURE If We Wish to Compete or Not - What Should We Do?
If you are pondering this question in August or September, this is a tough call. The NYFC Cheerleading Championships Registration Fee is $100. After September 30th, it becomes the $100 PLUS a $50 late fee to total $200. Therefore you have to decide how likely you are and whether you should take the chance AS ALL REGISTRATION FEES FOR BOTH THE FOOTBALL SIDE AND THE CHEER SIDE ARE COMPLETELY NON-REFUNDABLE.
If you have already missed the early entry deadline of September 30th, this becomes an easier decision. We accept squads into the cheer competition until roughly two weeks prior to the event OR when the competition division is full, whichever occurs FIRST! Therefore simply contact SNI, get a feel for how full the event field is, set an internal deadline of making a decision and then enter or do not enter at that deadline. Of course, we try to work with groups whenever possible but this is something that you have to decide on your own.
Question #9 - Can We Cheer at Our Team's Games on Saturday and Still Make the Cheer Competition in Time?
Probably nothing we work harder to make sure happens is to ensure your team can cheer at their football game. We try to make sure this happens through many means because most solid football teams come to the cheer competition to cheer for their CHEER SQUAD!. If there is simply no way around having a conflict, we TRY to ensure you can AT LEAST cheer for the first HALF of the game, but 99% of the teams find no conflict. This is why the cheer schedule is generally not completed until just a few days prior to the event.
Question #10 - We Don't Cheer With a Football Team, Can We Enter the NYFC Cheerleading Championships?
Absolutely you can! We have several teams that attend that are just Cheer-only groups. They generally ONLY enter the Masters Level competition because they tend to be talented and like to do stunts (the two BIG factors that push teams into the Masters Level of the competition.
Also, if you would like, we can pair you up with a football team that does not maintain a cheer squad and you can cheer on their sidelines and at halftime of the game. This is a big treat for the girls AND a super great fellowship opportunity for the cheer squad and the team they cheer for!
Question #11 - How Can We Best Get Our Rooms We Need for the NYFC?
Daytona Beach, despite it's lofty name recognition, is really quite a small town. To be able to acquire the thousands of rooms needed for the NYFC during the very busy Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend, Sports Network works with the hotels to set aside all of the rooms needed at very reasonable rates. A complete list of these rooms can be found on our NYFC Host Hotel Website. These hotels have been specially screened by SNI. These properties welcome youth football and cheer groups, offer solid rate discounts, and have become partners with the NYFC. Staying at one of these properties does give you some tangible benefits because these hotels are a true part of the event. The biggest advantage is game dates and times are released several days earlier to allow these teams to schedule Thanksgiving Dinners with the NYFC hotels. Also, groups that bring two or more football teams OR cheer squads to the NYFC and stay at one or more of these NYFC Tournament Hotels can be eligible to receive a credit for their football registration fees (see the Eastern NYFC Costs for complete details!).
The NYFC host hotels appreciate the family atmosphere that surrounds this football competition. This partnership ensures the hotel that the teams will be adequately supervised and just as importantly, it ensures we will have sufficient oceanfront and inland hotels available at all quality & price levels at reasonable vacation timeframe prices. Does that mean that EVERY adult with your group MUST stay with the team in this hotel? Of course not, but hotels certainly welcome your players, coaches and parents to ensure both your group and the hotel have a great experience that you can repeat year after year should you wish.

Question #12 - Do We Have to Stay in the Daytona Beach Area? Can We Camp? RV? Stay in Orlando?
Question #13 - Didn't You Used to Have a Package Plan Where Everyone HAD to Stay in Your Hotels?
The NYFC allows maximum flexibility for organized teams to stay anywhere they desire. However, squads that have cheerleaders scattered "to the winds" should think hard whether this is a workable scenario. Scheduling practices, team meeting or even getting to the games or the cheer competition on-time could be a nightmare. Having a parent or two scattered about can be workable but all cheer coaches should think carefully about having their cheerleaders scattered throughout Volusia County, Florida.
Yes, this is true. In a different era, football teams did EVERYTHING together with their cheer squads. The team practiced together and the dads came to the fields and the moms were their too talking together on the sidelines and the girls were cheering on the nearby track. After the games, all the kids and the families got together and went to get slurpees or eat pizza. And when they traveled to a post-season tournament, they did so as a group and organized together effortlessly. While a few groups still operate in the this manner, our increasingly disconnected world leaves more and more teams without the ability to easily organize as an entire group to travel. Therefore, Sports Network made the decision to make this tournament much easier for teams to organize by simply having a registration fee, per participant fees, and then a complete listing of great hotels that teams may use (or not) . This will allow coaches to register and collect money for their players and coaches, and simply tell the parents where they will be staying and how to obtain an entry pass into all of the games - very simple!
Doing this will allow some who want expensive and fancy to have just that, while others who may be on a tighter budget to look for other accommodations that work for them! Some may want to camp or have family in the area they can stay with. Mostly, this makes this very simple and easy for coaches who in most cases, just want to take care of their kids to ensure they are taken care of and not chase down parents to get rooming information and money for their family hotel needs. Want to take a look at the listing for the most recent year? Here is the complete NYFC Host Hotel Website.
Question #14: - When Do We Find Out What Time We Cheer on Saturday?
Cheer schedules are formulated AFTER The NYFC game schedule is finalized. This is done to ensure all of the cheer start times can be moved and managed to try to eliminate conflicts with the game times of the football teams. And because of state playoff schedules and other outside factors, the football games schedule generally cannot be finalized until just 7-10 days prior to the NYFC event. Therefore, the NYFC Cheerleading Championships final schedule is not completed and ready for distribution generally until the weekend prior to the event.
Question #15 - What Are the Total Costs to Attend the NYFC?
Both NYFC event maintains a $200 Team Registration Fee if the team is registered with SNI no later than September 30th (that means RECEIVED by SNI no later than the 30th!). Football teams registering after this date will pay an additional $100 late fee, making their registration fee $300. Also, cheer squads looking to enter the cheer competition pay a $100 per team registration if the team is registered with SNI no later than September 30th (that means RECEIVED by SNI no later than the 15th!). Cheer squads registering after this date will pay an additional $50 late fee, making their registration fee $150.
This Registration Fee, along with the Team Package Plan fees, pay for all of the costs associated with the event including: team package items (shirts, medallions, patches, team photos), venue, judges, equipment, trophies, staffing, etc. These costs to attend are outlined within the Official NYFC Invitation with even greater details found on the "Costs of the Eastern NYFC" webpage.
The only other costs to attend the event are controlled by YOU! Travel costs, hotel and/or camping costs, food and any entertainment costs you plan to do will be up to you as well. YOU HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THESE COSTS, making a trip to the National Youth Football Championships affordable on almost any budget.
Question #16 - When Do We Have to Arrive in Daytona Beach?
Because your competition is not until Saturday afternoon & evening and the Awards Ceremony is not until Saturday Night, cheer squads have much more flexibility on when they can choose to attend. However, many of the hotels may not have rooms for wish to tie-up rooms for just a single night stay. If this is you plan, best to get your rooms EARLY before they get busy!
Those attending with football teams generally tend to arrive on the same day as the football team (Tuesday or Wednesday) and stay until Saturday Night after the awards ceremony or Sunday morning. They have a full 5 days and 4 nights of fun and enjoy their stay at the beach! IF YOU WISH TO HAVE YOUR TEAM PICTURE TAKEN, you MUST attend the NYFC Event Registration as outlined on the Event Schedule. If you wish to forgo receiving your picture, you can actually register ON SITE AT THE CHEER COMPETITION ONE HOUR PRIOR TO YOUR COMPETITION TIME. We try to be as flexible as possible to allow your squad the ability to make this weekend the type of experience YOU want it to be! Check the NYFC Cheerleading Championships Official Rules for more details on this important aspect of you trip.
Question #17 - We Want to Fly Into Town, Do We Really Need Ground Transport in Daytona?
NOT NECESSARILY! Because your event registration, competition and your awards ceremony are all at the same location, if you can either book your rooms early and get a location close to these Ocean Center Arena, you can likely forgo ground transport. ,However, THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING THIS DECISION. If you do this, you will need to obtain buses or vans to get to football games, Orlando Theme Parks, Mainland Malls or other entertainment off the beach. If you have specific questions about this important decision, please look at our NYFC Ground Transportation Page, or call our office to talk about options.
Question #18 - What Determines Who Gets into the NYFC Cheer Championships and Who Does Not?
Any cheer squad wishing to attend can download the invite to attend, read through this website, and register on-line and then attend the competition. The official invitation is mailed to over 2,000 youth football leagues largely throughout North America. We annually mail a total of roughly 3,000 invitations to teams around the world but more importantly, we post all of the cheer information RIGHT HERE on the NYFC website! Teams who register to attend are screened immediately upon entry to ensure they have credible backgrounds and good references from their league officials and/or peer coaches in their league.
Question #19 - We Have Multiple Cheer Squads - Can They Compete Back - to - Back?
SNI cannot guarantee this schedule configuration. First, the competition times are generally drawn at random within each age division. The NYFC Cheerleading Championships competition GENERALLY is slated to be held with the youngest age division competing FIRST and the OLDEST division competing last within the multiple age divisions. Therefore the BEST we can do if there is solid reason for the request is to have your younger team go LAST in their division and the older team go FIRST in the higher division. This is a very rare request but it happens.
Question #20 - What is Your Rule Regarding Mascots in Competition?
A mascot is a vastly younger cheerleader or a cheerleader with obvious mental and/or physical limitations that do not allow them to perform on the same level as the vast majority of the other cheerleaders. If a team has any "mascot" cheerleaders, they are encouraged to perform with the squad at the NYCC. Mascots are not scored by judges either pro or con during the competition; mascots who are extra cute get no plus points and mascots who are nervous or unsure and make mistakes are assessed no minus.
Only TWO mascots are allowed in the performance area at any one time. Mascots are NOT allowed to be “flyers” in stunts. Use of a mascot in this manner will result in a diminished score in the PYRAMID portion of the event. Judges are specifically directed to not judge mascots. We STRONGLY recommend that if your mascots are good enough to be part of your stunts, you should list them as a “cheerleader” rather than a mascot.
Question #21 - We're Pretty Sure We Want to Attend the NYFC...What's the First Step?
That's easy....read through the cheer website carefully and register on-line through the amazing NYFC Myteam website. You can also contact Sports Network if you still have any questions! We also recommend teams find other groups in your area that have attended the NYFC previously and ask them for their unbiased opinions. We are sure after you look around, you will see why so many teams annually work to make themselves a part of this great football weekend.
THE NYFC IS NOT FOR EVERY GROUP. IF YOU DON'T HAVE STRONG SUPPORT, WELL BEHAVED KIDS, & SOLID COACHING, THIS EVENT IS LIKELY NOT FOR YOU! Coming to the NYFC will take hard work most likely...but it will also likely be the most rewarding and satisfying things you will ever be a part of.
