Standard Operating Procedures for the World Drill Championships

WDC Rules & Regulations

The World Drill Championships is unique among all the events produced by Sports Network International. Not only is it an event featuring adult competitors, but it exists within the world of the NHSDTC, which must be factored into consideration. Additionally, the spectators play a strong role in the WDC environment. This page will not only cover the WDC SOP & Scoresheet but will also address the WDC community as a whole.

WDC & the Drill Community

People at the WDC

  • • SNI has the perspective that there are four types of people attending the WDC. There are some differences between them that we will address here, but it is our hope that EVERYONE attending the event handles themselves appropriately. To achieve that goal, SNI has established Community Standards that are expected of everyone.
  • Minors: Also known as Solo only cadets who are coming to the NHSDTC without being a part of a team competing and under the active supervision of an instructor.
  • Spectators: This is everyone in the vicinity of the WDC who is there to watch and support competitors or simply to enjoy the experience of being there. For the most part, spectators are adults (18 & over).
  • Competitors: These are all of the individuals who are registered to compete at the WDC. Part of their registration will have them agree to a specific Code of Conduct that has also been shown below.
  • Guardians: New this year! SNI has determined that the most effective way to keep everyone on their best behavior is through the watchful presence of 'Guardians'. There will be five identified Guardians - see list - who are publicly taking on this role. SNI has granted them the power to address issues on the spot or communicate with SNI if there are problems. There are other Guardians who are intentionally not disclosed. They will also be SNI's eyes and ears. The role of Guardians is to ensure that everyone realizes that someone is always watching.

Community Standards

  • National High School Drill Team Championships: Throughout this weekend of drill competition, the NHSDTC deserves tremendous respect and deference as the event host. Remain aware of the Nationals competitions happening around you and be supportive of their presence.
  • Safety First: All competitors must know their capabilities, as should any minors in the area. While the nature of the sport involves pushing boundaries and attempting challenging moves, DO NOT engage in drill moves or general behavior that puts yourself or others at risk.
  • Conduct: Everyone is expected to conduct themselves with the highest standards of behavior. Handle interactions with grace and respect, look out for others, and be supportive of competitors. Unacceptable behavior—including aggression, profanity, lack of decorum, or inappropriate attire—will not be tolerated. This extends to inappropriate slogans or images displayed on clothing.
  • WDC Area: The area designated for the WDC has enough space to accommodate competitors and spectators without spilling into walkways or other areas. It is everyone's responsibility to maintain this space in pristine condition. Garbage receptacles will be provided—please use them.
  • No Drilling Outside Areas: Drilling is strictly prohibited outside of designated drill and practice areas. It is extremely dangerous to begin drilling in pedestrian walkways. Remember, safety first!
  • Prohibited: Operable firearms are prohibited in the Ocean Center, as are sharpened bayonets or any dangerous equipment that could cause potential harm to individuals.
  • Beyond the Ocean Center: The drill community is expected to conduct themselves appropriately even when outside the Ocean Center. The bandshell and other gathering areas can still have a tremendous negative impact on the event should problems arise. Remain vigilant and watchful.
  • Drugs, Alcohol & Inappropriate Conduct: It is wholly inappropriate for anyone to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at any time while participating in drill activities or when in the presence of minors. This includes the Awards Ceremony. The younger members of our community require safeguarding. Inappropriate behavior involving minors will result in the most severe consequences.
  • Online Forums: Beyond the WDC event itself, exemplary behavior is expected in all online forums. The drill community is a small, interconnected group where negative behavior has serious ramifications for everyone involved.
  • Violations: Anyone found in violation of these standards will be either corrected or possibly removed from the Ocean Center by SNI, Ocean Center security or Guardians.
