Frequently Asked Questions

Any JROTC program worldwide is eligible to attend. Simply enter your school's information into the MySchool website and pay the required registration fee and your slot is guaranteed.

Every school determines which Level they feel their team would best compete in. Schools are gauged on OVERALL performance and competitive level. A general rule of thumb is if your program typically trophies at local drill meets, your unit is most certainly a DIV 2 entry. If your program is newer and cannot compete well against many of the local programs in your area, you are probably a perfect candidate for the DIV 3 level. Teams winning most local meets and finishing well regionally against some of the better schools in the country, your team is definitely a DIV 1!

Yes. While we typically allow schools to choose their own competition level, there are times when we feel that a school is too competitive to be a lower level and may require you to move levels. This typically occurs in December or January when most all entries have been received. Occasionally it may occur when a program begins exceling in drill meets leading up to the event.

SNI strongly encourages schools to enter all four events so they are eligible for the overall title. However, there are occasions when programs are allowed to register to compete even though they might be missing an event (typically Exhibition for newer programs). Contact SNI to discuss your particular situation.

A full team will require 13 cadets in order to compete fully without penalty. Inspection requires 12 cadets plus a cadet commander, Regulation requires 12 cadets plus a cadet commander, Color Guard is 4 cadets only and Exhibition requires a minimum of 8 cadets plus a cadet command with no maximum limit. If you are bringing two teams that would be a minimum of 26 cadets.

The no cross over rule states that no individual cadet can compete for more than one TEAM, meaning Armed vs Unarmed. All cadets on a given team can do multiple events for that team, but they cannot move over to a different team and also compete there.

Open Level Color Guard is a separate competition comprised of color guard units that either attending to only do Color Guard or they are from a program that is also competing with a full team but has an additional color guard team that they wish to compete. OLCG has no designated competitive level - it is open to all programs. The registration fee for OLCG is $75 per additional Color Guard team.

Many people ask this question when they see the schedule or a scoring report with that event title. Unarmed Color Guard is merely the event where teams that are otherwise Unarmed for their other events, compete their Color Guard. Only CGs representing Unarmed teams compete in this event and their scores apply to the overall scoring for that Unarmed division.

The Armed events at the Nationals are held under the guidelines of Army Training Circular 3-21.5. The Unarmed events are held under the guidance of Air Force Manual AFMAN 36-2203. The NHSDTC allows all units to perform in accordance with the requirements outlined in their particular service manual. Every unit competes under their own service manual or the manual of your choosing (all schools state to the judge the manual they will be utilizing during their report in) BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER, the NHSDTC SOP is followed FIRST!

All schools register for the NHSDTC on either Thursday or Friday before the event. The hotel packages offered are a base three night stay (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) but many schools choose to come earlier or stay later. Extra nights can be arranged for your stay.
